Key Information
Collective Agreements (Kollektivvertrage)
Over 95% of Austrian workers are covered by collective agreements that set minimum wages for their industry. These are negotiated between trade unions and employer associations and are legally binding.
14 Salary Payments
Austria has a unique system of 14 salary payments per year. In addition to 12 monthly salaries, employees receive a 13th month (Weihnachtsgeld/Christmas bonus) and 14th month (Urlaubsgeld/holiday bonus). These are taxed at a reduced 6% rate.
Sector Variations
Minimum wages vary significantly by sector. For example, retail trade, hospitality, manufacturing, and professional services all have different minimum rates defined in their respective collective agreements.
General Recommendation
The OGB (Austrian Trade Union Federation) and WKO (Austrian Economic Chamber) have agreed on a general recommended minimum of approximately EUR 2,000-2,100 per month (14 times per year), though many sectors have higher minimums.
12 vs 14 Payment Comparison
| Payment Structure | Monthly | Annual Total | Tax Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14 payments (standard Austria) | €2,100 | €29,400 | 6% on 13th/14th |
| 12 payments (prorated) | €2450 | €29,400 | Normal rates |
The 14-payment system provides a significant tax advantage because the 13th and 14th month salaries are taxed at only 6% instead of regular progressive income tax rates.
