Key Information
National Minimum Wage
Ireland's national minimum wage is set by the government on the recommendation of the Low Pay Commission. It is reviewed annually and applies to experienced adult workers aged 20 and over.
Age-Based Rates
Younger workers receive sub-minimum rates: Under 18 (70%), Age 18 (80%), Age 19 (90%). The full adult rate applies from age 20. First-year employees after age 18 may receive 80% of the minimum in their first year of employment.
Living Wage
Ireland is transitioning toward a Living Wage, which is expected to reach 60% of the median hourly wage. The current minimum wage increase is part of this transition toward ensuring wages meet the cost of living.
Coverage
The national minimum wage applies to most employees, including full-time, part-time, temporary, and casual workers. Some exceptions include close family members of the employer and those in statutory apprenticeships.
